Eyebrow Piercing 101

If you are considering getting an eyebrow piercing, here are a few fun facts and tips regarding the piercing process. First, you may be asking yourself, what is an Eyebrow piercing? An Eyebrow piercing is a surface piercing with a separate entry and exit hole. The piercing itself sits perpendicular to your skin along your eyebrow. You always want to seek a reputable piercer to perform any piercing, especially, eyebrow piercings since the delicate facial skin can be prone to rejecting the piercing if not preformed properly.

Eyebrow Piercings are typically preformed with a 16-gauge needle. It is crucial that you choose your initial jewelry wisely. ASTM F136 Implant Grade Titanium, 14-Karat Gold or 316L Stainless Steel is recommended for initial piercings. You’ll want to steer clear of cheaper plated metals. A lightweight curved barbell is the jewelry of choice for initial eyebrow piercings. You are going to want to choose a length longer than your desired look to accommodate swelling during the healing process.

As far as pain goes for receiving an eyebrow piercing, it is surprisingly rated rather low on the pain scale. Of course, everyone’s pain tolerance is going to differ, but in general, most people say getting an eyebrow piercing is completely tolerable. It’s most often described as a quick pinch with some pressure, but not particularly painful. This is what makes getting an eyebrow piercing so appealing to those who want to shake up their style but have an issue with pain tolerance. Due to the location of the piercing being placed by delicate facial skin, you may experience more initial swelling than you would a common piercing. Although, the swelling should go down moderately quickly. If you use a cold compress and stay away from blood thinning agents, you should be totally fine!

If the proper care is taken, an eyebrow piercing can heal in 2-3 Months. You will want to make sure your piercing is completely healed before switching out your jewelry. Avoid fidgeting with your piercing while it’s still healing. If you are moving your jewelry around before it’s healed, you may cause scarring/piercing rejection as well as prolonging the healing process. Some other tips for your eyebrow piercing while healing, is to avoid waxing your eyebrows during these few months. There is no issue with plucking your eyebrows during this time, but out of precaution, it’s recommended that you avoid waxing during this time. Another thing to be cautious with is using makeup and face wash. Any unnatural substance should be avoided as chemicals can cause adverse reactions while healing. The last tip for healing would be to watch out for your hair/bangs. The last thing you want to do is get your bangs or hair snagged on a fresh piercing. Even worse than the pain that may cause, is the oils and bacteria lurking in your hair that may cause infection.

Once you are completely healed you get to experience the best part which is finally switching out your jewelry and styling your face. Since eyebrow piercings have a separate entry and exit hole, it can be quite difficult to switch out your jewelry the first few times. If you go to your local piercer, they will switch out your jewelry for you and even give you some tips and tricks to switch it out yourself in the future.

Once your eyebrow piercing is healed, you also have the option to shake up your look even more with the new trend of double eyebrow piercings. Whether it’s one on each side or two piercing right next to each other, it can be a fun way to express your style. Be creative, and come up with your own trend starting look.
