Rook & Snug Piercings 101

Rook & Snug Piercings are all the rage right now. As the curated ear trend grows even more in popularity, so does the need for more unique & fun piercings. My favorite thing about the Rook and Snug piercings, and what makes them absolutely perfect to enhance your curated ear, is that its entrance and exit points are visible from the front of the ear. This means, unlike a standard piercing that exits through the back of your ear, you have the chance to add twice the glamour with 1 single puncture. Here are some facts about the Rook & Snug Piercings in case you are still on the fence about booking that appointment with your piercer.

The Rook is located in the smaller fold of cartilage in the upper part of the ear. Also, known as the “perforation of the anti-helix” aka the cartilage ridge between the outer and inner ear above your tragus. Traditionally, a rook piercing is done vertically in the ear ridge, so both sides of the jewelry are displayed. It’s essentially the sister to the Daith piercing and the more practical cartilage piercing. This procedure, depending on your anatomy, is preformed with a 16GA or 18GA piercing needle. Receiving a Rook piercing can be more painful than a regular piercing since the cartilage is very thick in that area. The added force and pressure a piercer will have to apply to get the puncture clean through your thick cartilage may cause more discomfort than you are used to. On average, the pain should subside within 30 min to an hour. Even though pain tolerance varies from person to person, on average a Rook piercing is rated between a 6-8 out of 10 on a pain scale. As for all piercings, it’s important to seek a reputable piercer to ensure the best placement and appropriate starter jewelry. An experienced piercer will pierce you with a curved barbell for the initial piercing. Steer clear of hoops or horseshoes until your piercing is healed to avoid snagging, scarring, and prolonging the healing process. Once your piercing is completely healed, you can switch out your jewelry and really have fun designing the perfect ear.

Now let’s talk about Snug Piercings. Snug Piercings are often referred to as the anti-helix piercing. It’s referred to as the anti-helix piercing because the area is punctured by a horizontal piercing that sits right above the anti-tragus, which is the inner ridge of the cartilage part of the ear. This procedure is preformed with a 16GA piercing needle. Receiving a Snug piercing isn’t for the faint of heart. On average, people rate receiving a snug piercing as an 8-9 out of 10 on a pain scale. Healing time for a Snug piercing can range between 3-12 month. How you care for your piercing after receiving it will greatly impact how long it will take you to heal. As with all piercings, you should use a saline solution spray twice a day to disinfect and sterilize your piercing. We suggest using Neilmed Fine Mist Piercing Aftercare Spray. If you don’t have access to a saline spray, you can use warm, clean salt water. Avoid using alcohol/chemicals, powders or lotions around your piercing. Avoid fidgeting with your piercing, as touching the area can lead to infection and prolonged healing. Once you are finally healed, you get to enjoy the best part, shopping! There are many different jewelry styles you can choose from for your Rook or Snug piercing. Since both piercings are similar in the fact that you can view the entrance and exit point from the front, you can use the same styles of jewelry in both piercings. Here are some examples of the jewelry you can wear in your Rook or Snug 😊
